Should you buy wedding insurance?

Disastrous wedding mishaps have long been a comedy staple, probably because so many of us can relate. What bride- or groom-to-be hasn’t had nightmares about hurricane-force winds blowing over the reception tent or a drunken cousin falling into the wedding cake?
Besides the potential for embarrassing memories, there’s a lot of money at stake: The average wedding in 2012 will cost nearly $27,000, not including the honeymoon – about what you’d pay for a well-appointed new car.
Just as you wouldn’t drive off the lot without car insurance, so you might want to consider buying wedding insurance. It usually costs only a few hundred dollars but could save you tens of thousands if horrendous weather, sudden illness or a bankrupt vendor ruins your day.
Many insurance companies now offer wedding insurance. Typically, policies will reimburse you for deposits and charges you’ve paid to wedding vendors, as well as travel costs and other expenses incurred, if you need to cancel or postpone the wedding for a covered reason.

Getting insurance for a wedding, a divorce, and a place to stay

COLUMBIA (WACH) - It is common to think about insuring a car, but these days just about anything of value can be covered.
It is said to be one of the biggest moments in a women's life, her wedding day.
There is so much that goes into planning the wedding from the flowers, to the dress and the reception. Many brides-to-be have elected to obtain wedding insurance to help ease their mind.
"We protect your wedding gifts against some type of physical loss. If there was damage at the reception, or if there was a storm or anything or even theft," said Milton Wright, SC State Farm Agent.
Wright says a policy can also ensure you don't lose money if the bride or groom is called away for military duty.
For some, the fairy tale can turn into a nightmare and end up in divorce.
Wright says believe it or not there are divorce policies out there.
"It's becoming more of a common thing unfortunately, and we see insurance is there to protect against things of that nature," said Wright.

Surprise wedding gifts? You might just love them

NEW YORK (AP) - As a young bride-to-be, it never occurred to Jodi R.R. Smith to put a pitcher on her wedding registry.
But one turned up unsolicited amid the other gifts.
"At the time I thought it was lovely enough," recalled Smith, of Marblehead, Mass. "The giver had taken the time to look at my wedding crystal and found something that would match it well."
Still, Smith doubted she'd get much use out of it. But now, more than 15 years later, she says, "I love the pitcher. We use it anytime we can. It looks beautiful on our table. We have used it for orange juice during brunch, water and sodas for lunch, and even as a decanter for red wine."
And so it often goes with those surprise wedding gifts, the ones you didn't register for and don't quite know what to do with. Give that vase or griddle or gadget a chance, and your reaction might just change from "What am I going to do with this?" to "I can't live without it."
