Restored clock returns to spot downtown after year's worth of workA refurbished mid-20th century jewelers street clock has been returned to its longtime home at 10th and J streets after spending nearly the last year at the Art Foundry Gallery. There, the art deco-style clock received some new parts and had other parts restored. A stainless steel case was added to prevent vandalism and preserve original parts. The clock, which is estimated to be more than 100 years old, will now keep time through GPS and will automatically correct itself after power outages or time changes. It is estimated the clock stopped ticking more than 15 years ago, and it subsequently suffered from inattention and vandalism. The late jeweler Fred Mayes donated the clock to the city in 1993 before his retirement in 1998. Last June, the city of Sacramento took the clock from 10th and J streets to restore it. The $24,000 project was made possible by a $12,000 historic places grant, $6,000 in downtown redevelopment tax increment funds and $6,000 from federal Community Development Block Grant funds.
