Restored clock returns to spot downtown after year's worth of workA refurbished mid-20th century jewelers street clock has been returned to its longtime home at 10th and J streets after spending nearly the last year at the Art Foundry Gallery. There, the art deco-style clock received some new parts and had other parts restored. A stainless steel case was added to prevent vandalism and preserve original parts. The clock, which is estimated to be more than 100 years old, will now keep time through GPS and will automatically correct itself after power outages or time changes. Imported Italian neon will highlight the art deco engagement ring design. It is estimated the clock stopped ticking more than 15 years ago, and it subsequently suffered from inattention and vandalism. The late jeweler Fred Mayes donated the clock to the city in 1993 before his retirement in 1998. Last June, the city of Sacramento took the clock from 10th and J streets to restore it. The $24,000 project was made possible by a $12,000 historic places grant, $6,000 in downtown redevelopment tax increment funds and $6,000 from federal Community Development Block Grant funds. Shreve's goes for 'Majesty'The relocation from 440 Boylston St. follows a multimillion-dollar renovation of the brownstone at 39 Newbury St. and a nearly $10 million investment in additional inventory. Tentatively set to open May 14, the store features fine jewelry on the first floor, a mezzanine-level watch salon, and a third-floor giftware department and bridal registry overlooking the ritzy first block of Newbury Street. With custom cabinetry, LED lighting and a 75,000-pound vault to showcase its finest pieces, Shreve’s “spared no expense” after studying famed jewelers around the world such as Bucherer, Gubelin and Wempe, according to Groffenberger. A 1930s Art Deco chandelier by French glass designer Rene Lalique hangs over the entryway. The once gas-fired piece, designed for Shreve’s original store at Boylston and Arlington streets, was discarded by the company’s previous owners, but tracked down to a Bedford barn and restored. When those owners moved Shreve’s in 2005, they abandoned its heritage and Boston tradition for a contemporary store.
