Gujarat IAS officer ties knot at a mass wedding ceremony

Hailing from tribal dominated Khedbhrama taluka of Sabarkantha district, the 28-year old Kharadi tied the knot with Seema, a tribal woman from Vijayanagar of the same district, on Akshaya Tritiya day today, family sources said.

Avoiding a pompous ceremony, Kharadi preferred to keep his big day a low key affair with only close family friends invited to the venue.

"My brother is tying the knot today at a simple mass wedding ceremony being held in Sabarkantha," Shirish Kharadi, brother of the groom told PTI.

"Spending on extravagant weddings is sheer waste of money. My brother wished to set an example by getting married at a simple ceremony," he said.

Vijay Kharadi's mentor at Sardar Patel Institute of Public Administration(SPIPA), J M Acharya said "Vijay is tying a knot at a very simple ceremony being held near his home town. He hasn't changed one bit after he became an IAS officer... he is the same down to earth Vijay I knew."

He (Vijay) had joined SPIPA in 2006 and cleared IAS in 2009, he said adding that prior to coming here he had done BE-Computers from a leading private university in the state.

Ahmedabad to host over 2000 weddings on Tuesday

If your drive to your destination on Tuesday takes you longer than usual, blame the hundreds of baraatis who will be dancing on the city streets that day.

And if the pundits’ predictions are to be believed, there will be some 1,000 or more couples who will tie the knot on April 24, the auspicious occasion of Akha Treej or Akshaya Tritiya..

Touted to be the last auspicious date for weddings this season, wedding venues are booked chock-a block for this day in city. Although April 25, Wednesday, is also a good day for weddings, kanyadaan is not conducted on a Budhvar (Wednesday) as per Gujarati tradition.

Hence, Tuesday walks away with the full honours of scripting hundreds of “live happily ever after” stories.

As the period from April 30 to May 31 is considered inauspicious, the next propitious dates and days for weddings will fall only in the month of June! Citing reasons for this, astrologer Chandrakant Bhatt says, “Guru and Shukra set in this month together making this period inauspicious for couples to tie the knot”.

Rains put farmers at agents' mercy

"We could not postpone the wedding. We have told the groom's family that we may delay the gifts. We had bought gold earlier and we will even try to buy a premium car for the groom with the help from our family and friends," said Singh, who owns 12 acre of land in village Shahipur in Landra tehsil.

"The erratic rains will have an adverse impact on the quality and yield of wheat. This will further hamper the investment capability of farmers for social commitments. The dependence on commission agents will increase. Good crop returns ensure the smooth running of a farmer's household before the next crop is harvested," said National Centre for Agricultural Economics and Policy Research's principal scientist Pratap Singh Birthal .

"More than 75% crop is still on fields and farmers are disturbed due to weather vagaries. Yields are very good this year but wheat is not being purchased due to high moisture content. Advance payments made to farmers have increased with the ongoing wedding season, strengthening our relationship," said Khanna mandi trader Raj Sood.
