Wedding gowns on show

Four decades have passed since Cheryll Clark from Massey last slipped into her dream wedding gown.

She married husband Warren on March 27, 1971 at Iona church in Blockhouse Bay wearing the dress designed by prominent designer Vinka Lucas.

The lace and satin gown originally came from Lucas' Auckland store Maree De Maru and came with a cathedral-length train.

"I met my husband in July 1970. We got engaged that November and we were married by March the next year. It was all quite quick and I thought where on earth am I going to find a frock?

"Then I opened up the Western Leader one day and saw this secondhand dress for $60. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw it advertised because it would have been worth about $1000."

She didn't waste any time and quickly called the owner.

"It fitted perfectly. It was as though it was made for me," she says. "It was definitely one of those moments people talk about when you see the dress and think that's the one."

Worcester Oxfam wedding dresses slashed

Wedding dresses at a charity shop in Worcester have been slashed by a customer with a craft knife.

Staff at the Oxfam shop in Mealcheapen Street discovered the damage when they were checking stock on Monday.

Wedding gowns, bridesmaids dresses and designer outfits had all been sliced with the sharp blade.

Manager Julie Skipp said: "It's depriving the needy we collect for and the people who can't afford a designer outfit."

She said the shop would have been able to make up to £500 by selling the outfits.

The damaged outfits included three wedding dresses, two bridesmaids' outfits and three silk designer dresses.

One of the designer garments was to have been the prize in the shop's Valentine's Day raffle.

Ms Skipp said staff still have no idea why the outfits were slashed.

"There's lots of thoughts and rumours going around in the shop - was somebody jilted, was it a grievance about us personally? I don't think we'll ever know," she said.

Some of the chunkiest roles New York's fashion shows this fall went to Asian models.
According to the staff of the Mercedez-Benz Fashion week, the hottest commodity for runways were Asian models.
And casting directors were fighting for the rights to have these models on their runway.
About 40 Asian models are now in the mix, a clear indicator of how in-demand they are.
That equates to at least 2 Asians per show.
Trends have certainly changed compared to a few years back, when it was a rarity to spot even a single Asian woman in a big runway show.
Dating back to last September, Asian models landed close to 7 percent of the work on major fashion events.
A dramatic progress, compared to 2007, when one-third of New York shows had no women model of color at all.
The beneficiaries of such changes include Chinese supermodel Liu Wen the first face of Estee Lauder and Korea's Kang So-young,.. who led catwalk appearances in 7 collections so far.
