Pennington resident opens 2012 Miss American Pageant

PENNINGTON — It was a song Natalie Ragazzo had sung many times before, but the feeling that came with the performance this time was different.

In front of the packed Planet Hollywood Theater of the Performing Arts in Las Vegas, the 16-year-old Pennington resident sang “The Star-Spangled Banner” to open the preliminary round of the 2012 Miss America Pageant on Jan. 11.

“It was probably the most exhilarating feeling of my life,” Ragazzo said. “I’ve done it before, but that was my largest venue.

“The butterflies in my stomach and the applause the audience gave me — it was such an awesome experience.”

The Princeton Day School sophomore is no stranger to pageants.

She currently holds the title of Miss New Jersey’s Outstanding Teen, representing the state in the Miss America teen division.

Though her reign officially ends Saturday, it was Ragazzo’s involvement with the organization that gave her the opportunity to open the big show after she placed in the top 10 at a national competition in Orlando recently.
