    The couple

The bride and groom sit together, with their gazes lowered, just as the mendhi ceremony is about to begin.

    Lowered gaze

During the mendhi, the dulhan's (bride's) clothing is toned down and is not as flashy as the actual wedding day, but that doesn't mean it still isn't colorful in its own way!

Middle class Muslim women still victims of bias

New Delhi : Muslim women from middle class homes continue to battle discrimination despite efforts by the government and non-profit organisations to empower them, says veteran filmmaker-activist Rama Pandey, who is serialising her encounters with 26 women from the community in three volumes of stories.

Her book, “Begum Bano Aur Khatoon”, a collection of seven plays in Hindi, was unveiled in the capital last week. The other two are “Faisle”, which was serialised on television, and “Hum Hain”. Pandey is also an eminent broadcaster, writer and theatre personality.

Pandey said “Begum Bano Aur Khatoon” has been “welcomed by the imams of mosques who have admitted there was a need to address social issues in Muslim society”.

“I am a commentator of things of human interest. Any woman who fights injustice and triumphs over suffering attracts my attention. For 40 years of my life I have observed the incidents that I have described in my book. The book is a salutation to these women and my commitment to my cause of helping Muslim women in distress,” Pandey said.

"What's going on in our children's minds?"

A three-year-old sat on her father's shoulder among the crowds, waving the Egyptian flag and enthusiastically crying Tahya Masr (Long live Egypt); many days earlier, a thirteen-year-old boy had been shot, one of the revolution's martyrs. What goes on in children's minds is a question their sincerity and enthusiasm instantly raises. "What's going on in our children's minds?" asks Dr Afaf Owais, lecturer at the Faculty of Early Childhood in Cairo University, who represented her faculty during the Cairo Children's Film Festival at the Cairo Opera House. Research conducted on 48 children, girls and boys, from rural and urban Egypt showed deep-seated convictions concerning the place of women in contemporary Egypt, impressions about the army and police officers, and Muslim-Christian relations. The pictures they were shown to start a discussion included children standing in crowds during the revolution, a Christian priest and a Muslim Sheikh hand in hand, women during the demonstrations, unveiled women during the demonstrations, young men shaking hands with the army, and an old man kissing a young police officer.

Conviction has nothing to do with disqualification: Gilani

ISLAMABAD:  Amid demands that he should step down, Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani said on Monday that the conviction in the contempt case against him is not related to disqualification.

Speaking to the media in Islamabad, Gilani said that the 30-second detention which, will also “qualify a mention in the Guinness Book of World Records”, did not have anything to do with disqualification.

He said that the opposition should “show some patience” because he had the right to appeal his conviction in the court.

The prime minister said that the regulation of the house was the Speaker’s prerogative and that if the speaker, Dr Fehmida Mirza, disqualifies him he will join the “people of Pakistan”.

Gilani said that former president of the United States, Bill Clinton, when found guilty of the charges against him did not resign and continued with his job and questioned the gathering as to why he was asked to resign on “moral grounds”.

Freedom for All: 7 Causes in 7 Days

It was difficult for me to believe that Shane and Sarah’s wedding was not just a dream, like many FREEDOM dreams and visions I held onto to get me through the darkest days of their captivity. Having spent years speaking for them, fighting for them, because they did not have the FREEDOM to even do that, it has been difficult for me to absorb that they now have the FREEDOM to do so much more. Traveling back to Canada from California yesterday was much more than a trip home from a wedding. So many of us around the world fought so hard for so long for Josh, Shane and Sarah to have the FREEDOM......
