The bones and costumes of fictitious persons My ability to create characters is fuelled by six milieus in which I found myself during the course of my life. These are a convent; the x-ray department of Salisbury General Hospital; a couturier’s workshop; a bookshop; the Rhodesian department of Customs and Excise and the rooms of a plastic surgeon. My experiences inside these places gave me various templates for character formation: the skeleton; the garment of skin and flesh; a palette of colours; fabric and design; the expression of self; the drama of everyday life; and the perception of beauty. From the age of nine, I spent six formative years in a convent. There, for ten hours of each school day, I was exposed to the black-and-white garb of nuns who were prohibited any expression of taste in their personal attire These women, who smelt uniformly of plain soap and mustiness, had given up their early identities and taken on the names of saints or Latin names of spiritual quality. The right to personal joy and individual character had been cauterized early on in their spiritual careers and they were clothed from head to foot in habits and veils, the style of which dated back to medieval times and surely caused great discomfort in the central African heat. Bird Cage Style Veil IvoryBirdcage veils — at times called net or face veils — have not so long ago become more popular, partially due to movie and celebrity brides wearing them. Most recently, in 2007, Katherine Heigl wore one in her real-life wedding and Jessica Alba’s reputation wore a birdcage veil in the movie Fantastic Four 2: Rise of the Silver Surfer. The innovative bride, however, ofttimes alternatively chooses to wear her birdcage veil without a hat. Today, most brides attach this short, circular veil directly to their hair with a pin or comb, so that it hangs down around the head. I made gingerbread scones studded with chunks of apple for breakfast with lattes or afternoon cups of tea. We made Swedish meatballs and mashed potatoes and ate them after every snowy outing for several days, enough that I finally started getting sick on them (in my book, that means you've just had the right amount). Cass took two days off work and we played like kids. So I enjoyed the heck out of the snow week....
