Denmark celebrates its popular queen

On Saturday afternoon, Denmark’s Queen Margrethe II will take a ride in her gilded coach from the Amalienborg, her palace, to Copenhagen’s City Hall, where she will mount a balcony to greet her subjects.

The 40th anniversary of Margrethe’s ascension to the Danish throne will be quite an event.

But the crowds won’t begin to rival those at the diamond jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II of England later this year, let alone the half-a-million well-wishers who thronged the streets of London for the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton.

Queen Margrethe’s proclamation, back in 1972, was a sombre affair. The Danes had long done away with the pomp and ceremony of an official coronation. Dressed in black in mourning for her father, Margrethe took the same open coach journey as she will take on Saturday, to be proclaimed Queen by the country’s Prime Minister.

For all this, Margrethe is immensely popular among the Danes.

Kate Middleton dazzles at War Horse premiere ahead of her 30th birthday

Kate kept the rest of her look simple, with a plain black velvet clutch and a diamond bracelet being her only accessories beside her engagement and wedding rings.

Prince William clearly understood what a fashion station his sophisticated wife was making too, as he gallantly held the umbrella over her to try and shield her from the bleak weather.

Both were on fine form on the night, stopping to chat to fans who had queued for hours at the Odeon Leicester Square venue ahead of their arrival.

The premiere, which was held in aid of The Foundation of Prince William and Prince Harry, also saw director Steven Spielberg and star Jeremy Irvine take to the red-carpet.

Britain's Prince Philip Leaves Hospital After Heart Treatment

Prince Philip may have missed the royal family’s traditional Christmas celebrations, but he will be home in time to ring in the New Year.

The 90-year-old husband of Queen Elizabeth II was released from Papworth Hospital in Cambridge early  today after spending four nights there to undergo treatment for a blocked coronary artery .

Philip was seen smiling and waving to bystanders as he was driven away from the hospital to begin the hour-long car journey back to the Sandringham House in Norfolk, England, where the royal family had celebrated Christmas and Boxing Day without him.

The normally healthy and robust prince was hospitalized last Friday after experiencing chest pains.  After undergoing precautionary tests, he had minor surgery to open a blocked artery.  The procedure was said to be “minimally invasive” and a stent was put in.

Upon leaving the hospital today, the prince reportedly walked to the exit from his ward, rather than take an elevator.
